What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy helps to treat and prevent health problems where the root causes are in the muscles, joints and musculoskeletal system. An osteopath will use techniques such as stretching and massage to work on:

  • Better joint mobility
  • Tension in the muscles
  • Tissues and ligaments

This can help free you from pain so you can enjoy a better way of life, free from the discomfort that for many of our patients has become commonplace and a part of everyday life.

How can osteopathy help you?

Osteopathy can help with a range of conditions and complaints, helping you to feel more comfortable and relieving you of pain.

These are some of the specific complaints that osteopathy can treat:

Work-related pain

Do you spend all day sitting at a desk, or engaged in manual labour that is hard on the body? Osteopathy can relieve pain and stiffness in the joints or muscles as well as treat common conditions such as general back pain, sciatica or repetitive strain injury. We can help you avoid future pain and improve your wellbeing at work.

Neck pain

Neck pain is common in modern-day life, and it is often caused by bad posture and looking at computer screens all day. You might also experience trapped or irritated nerves in the neck that cause pain and discomfort elsewhere in the body. We can help with manipulations of your neck and complementary treatments on other parts of the body if needed.

Sports-related injury

We work with patients from all sporting backgrounds, from everyday gym-goers to professional athletes. Osteopathy can provide relief from stiffness and soreness or be used to treat specific strains or conditions such as tennis elbow. It can also improve suppleness and muscle tone to help you avoid further injuries in future.

Shoulder pain

Shoulder pain is often caused by inflammation, or damage to the joint, muscles, tendons or ligaments. We can use manipulation along with other techniques to mobilise the shoulder, reduce stiffness and loosen soft tissues, improving your symptoms and giving you back a full range of motion – without any pain.

Lower back pain

Lower back pain affects many people at different times in their life. We can help relieve your lower back pain and find solutions to prevent it from coming back. Your osteopath will work to find the cause of your back pain, then use techniques such as manipulation, massage and muscle energy techniques to work on your back.

Arthritis

We can help you cope with your diagnosis of degenerative or inflammatory arthritis, offering ways to relieve your symptoms, reduce pain and help with swelling. Arthritis is a chronic condition that usually can’t be cured, so ensuring you can live with it comfortably is essential. Many of our clients experience instant improvement.

Our specialisms

Our osteopaths are highly specialised and can offer bespoke, tailored treatments. These are two of the most popular options:

Cranial osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy uses techniques to diagnose specific areas where the body might be under strain, or experiencing weakness. It is a relaxing treatment that focuses on the whole body, not just the head, finding places where past injuries or stresses might have left other areas overcompensating. The aim is to rebalance the body, reduce discomfort and increase wellbeing.

Osteopathy for infants

Birth is one of the most difficult processes our bodies go through, for babies as well as for mothers. Babies can benefit enormously from osteopathic treatment, especially if they are suffering from complaints such as colic, low immunity or sleep disturbance. Cranial osteopathy is often used to treat complaints in babies and young children because it is such a gentle technique

What will happen at your appointment?

During your initial consultation you will have the opportunity to meet your osteopath and discuss your problems in detail. They will talk to you about your symptoms and carry out examinations to get to the root of your pain, so they can advise on the right treatment for you.

Your initial consultation will usually last around one hour. If you would like to go ahead with the treatment recommended by your osteopath, a standard appointment will generally last for 30 minutes.
